PRIME X COMMUNITY
What is Prime X Community?
PRIME X Community is a Manitoba-wide initiative designed to strengthen family mental health by empowering communities and students to co-create solutions that are both evidence-based and locally relevant.
Led by the PRIME (Promoting Innovation in Mental Health through eHealth Excellence) Research Theme at the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM), PRIME X connects community expertise with academic research to address mental health challenges faced by children, youth, and families, especially in underserved or underrepresented communities. It also links community organizations with students, creating opportunities for collaboration, learning, and impact.
Mental disorders affect 1 in 8 children and adolescents worldwide, yet far too many in Manitoba lack access to timely, culturally responsive care. PRIME X Community shifts the focus from academic-only research to collaborative, community-driven innovation that makes an immediate and lasting impact.
Our Goals
Support community-led mental health innovation through funding, expertise, and resources.
Build capacity in both communities and students to design, evaluate, and sustain effective programs.
Advance equity, diversity, inclusion, and self-determination, ensuring solutions reflect the voices of those most impacted.
Facilitate meaningful connections between community organizations, students, researchers, policymakers, and donors.
Share knowledge and success stories to inspire broader change across Manitoba and beyond.
Our Impact So Far
Engaged 30+ community-based organizations across Manitoba, serving newcomer, Indigenous, rural, urban, youth, and family mental health needs.
Hosted information sessions to introduce grants and fellowships, resulting in a low-barrier application process tailored to community feedback.
Built partnerships that reflect Manitoba’s diversity and reach both urban centres and rural/northern communities.

Current Projects
Community Survey
We are bringing together a community of Manitobans who care about improving mental health for children, youth, and families to help us understand how eHealth resources can help or hinder family wellness. The PRIME community survey helps us connect with people who share this passion, including those from industry community organizations, government, academia, and the general community. By sharing knowledge and building partnerships across the province, we hope to enhance wellness for families in Manitoba and beyond.
Priority Setting Research
This study seeks to understand families’ experiences and priorities regarding mental health and eHealth programs. We conducted 10 focus groups reflecting diverse experiences, to discuss mental health program needs and perspectives on the use of technology to support mental health. Focus groups reflected youth, parents and guardians, Indigenous community members, and newcomers perspectives. To aid discussion, we used creative arts-based methods to understand experiences and to create visual representations of each focus group discussion.
Focus Groups
These focus groups were held with parents, Indigenous community members, and immigrants and newcomers to discuss their perspectives on mental health and eHealth services in Manitoba. Artistic representations of their discussions were illustrated by a graphics designer at the event, which are now on display at CHRIM.

Building Emotional Awareness and Mental Health (BEAM)
BEAM is an app-based program designed to promote family mental health, co-created by parents and clinicians. It connects users with a peer parent coach, a systems navigator, and expert-led video content. The app also includes a community forum where parents can engage with one another. BEAM provides practical guidance on parenting and mental wellness, helping parents build skills in managing strong emotions, improving communication, and using supportive parenting strategies to strengthen family relationships and overall well-being.

Building Regulation In Dual Generations (BRIDGE)
BRIDGE is a 16-week program designed to support the mental health and parenting needs of mothers managing depression and their children. BRIDGE includes weekly group telehealth sessions and access to Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)-based psychoeducational videos and worksheets to build emotion-focused parenting skills, with the goal of improving family mental health and relationships. Mothers also fill out short surveys each week to track their progress.
