PRIME X Community Trainee Research Award Competition - FAQ
1. What is the PRIME Trainee Research Award?
The PRIME Trainee Research Award supports undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows conducting research aligned with PRIME’s objectives, including work related to family mental health, eHealth, and/or community partnership. The award is intended to help trainees cover research operating costs for their proposed project.
2. Who is eligible to apply?
Applicants must be an undergraduate student, graduate student, or postdoctoral fellow enrolled at an institution in Manitoba. Both the trainee and supervisor must be PRIME members. The proposed research must align with PRIME objectives, demonstrate a clear need for funding, and use rigorous research methodologies.
3. Do I need to be a PRIME member to apply?
Yes. Both the trainee and their supervisor must be PRIME members. Applicants are encouraged to ensure they are registered as PRIME members before applying.
4. What types of projects are a good fit for this award?
Projects should align with PRIME’s focus on family mental health and may include research that incorporates eHealth, community partnership, participant engagement, knowledge translation, or applied mental health research.
5. What can the funds be used for?
Funds can be used for research operating costs, including participant or community engagement activities, honoraria or participant compensation, research assistant support, non-salary services, computer software, materials and supplies related to conducting the research, directly relevant dissemination costs, and open access publication costs for the protocol of the approved project.
6. What can the funds not be used for?
Funds cannot be used for personal salary stipends, travel or accommodation, or publication costs that are not associated with the approved project.
7. What information is required in the application?
Applicants will be asked to provide their name, email, institution, trainee type, supervisor, project title, and whether they have applied to the PRIME Trainee Award before.
Applicants will also be asked to submit a summary of the proposed research, describe their role in the project, explain how the award funds would benefit the project, describe how the research relates to family mental health, and explain how the work incorporates eHealth and/or community partnership.
8. Do I need to submit a budget?
Yes. Applicants must submit an estimated budget outlining proposed expenses, itemized cost breakdowns, total costs, and the purpose of each expense. Minor changes to expenses may occur as the research progresses, but the estimated budget helps reviewers understand how the funds will be used.
9. What should the budget include?
The budget should include clear item descriptions, an itemized cost breakdown, the total cost for each item, and the purpose of each expense. Examples may include participant compensation, research assistant support, software licenses, catering for research activities, room rentals, protocol publication costs, or conference registration for an accepted presentation related to the proposed work.
10. Are previous applicants allowed to apply?
Yes. Previous applicants may apply. Applicants will be asked whether they have applied to the PRIME Trainee Award before and, if yes, to indicate the competition cycle/year and outcome, if known.
11. What are the reporting requirements if I receive an award?
Award recipients are expected to acknowledge PRIME and CHRIM funding on associated work and include the PRIME and CHRIM logos where appropriate.
A final report must be submitted within four weeks following the end of the award term. The report should be one page maximum and highlight personnel involved, project outcomes, knowledge learned, future directions, and any award-related achievements.
12. Will award recipients be asked to share their research with PRIME?
Yes. Award recipients will be asked to provide a brief research progress update for the PRIME newsletter and website, as well as submit a poster and/or slide for a future PRIME Conference.
